Stuck on Big Island, Hawaii

At the beach before disaster struck

Our trip to Hawaii was the culmination of many years planning. Hawaii had always seemed like somewhere we would probably never get to, considering its distance from the UK, so finally making it there was quite a big deal. We visited three islands as part of the holiday, flying into Maui, proceeding to Oahu, then planning to end with six nights on Big Island, split between Kona and Hilo. Kona was also our first ever AirBNB experience so it was quite a few firsts we were experiencing.

Stranded in Como

View of Lake Como

We visited Lake Como as the last part of a trip to Italy that had included a cruise around the Adriatic and some time in Milan and Venice. We were staying in Gravedona and needed to get back to Milan Malpensa Airport for our flight back to the UK. The plan was to get a bus from Gravedona to Colico, a train from Colico to Milano Centrale, then connect to another train to the airport. The day before we were leaving we heard that there was going to be a transport strike in Italy, but it was unclear what services would be affected.

On departure day we waited at the bus stops and the time for two of the scheduled buses came and went, we did however see a bus going in the other direction indicating that buses were running in some capacity. After an extended period of panic a bus finally showed up and we were able to get to the train station only to find it locked.

Venice Underwater

Happier Times Sailing Through Venice

Our most recent cruise was due to leave from Venice cruise terminal. I decided to splurge on a nice hotel on the island of Murano since there were direct boats from the airport to Murano as well as from Murano to the cruise terminal. Allowing us to arrive in style. This was the first cruise we were taking with Little Person, so we were keen to introduce her to one of our favourite ways to travel around Europe.

Leaving England went smoothly and we were on our way to Venice airport. It was October and we were told by the captain that there was some bad weather around Venice and we might be in for a rough landing. He wasn’t lying and we had a little bit of a rollercoaster getting onto the ground.

After collecting our luggage we proceeded to the ferry port where we were told that The Lagoon had been closed due to the amount of rain that had been recorded over the last day. As such no ferries were running to get to the Venetian islands. The desk at the airport recommended getting a bus to Piazzale Roma, located next to the train station and then proceeding to Murano from there.
